In this gentle and encouraging story, the reader, in dialogue with Mo, tries to encourage him to find another stick that can do all the same wonderful things that his favourite stick could do. Cheerfully endearing and colourful illustrations interplay with die-cuts to lead the reader through Mo’s exciting imagined exploits at a pacy clip – watch as the sun becomes the moon and the mountains become the sea. In the end it is suggested that maybe it is Mo himself, and not really the stick, that is so amazing.
This quite simple story is heartening, and the language used throughout the book is so positive that one can’t help but be uplifted. With slight echoes of inspiration from kids’ book titan, Jon Klassen’s I Want My Hat Back, this little gem offers its own vivid sparkle.
