Jean de Brunhoff (1899–1937) was a French writer and illustrator and creator of the Babar books. The book is based on a tale that Brunhoff's wife, Cécile, had invented for their children.

This timeless children's classic—originally published in 1931—follows the early adventures of Babar, a young elephant whose life changes forever when his mother is tragically killed by a hunter. Grief-stricken, Babar flees his jungle home and ventures into a nearby city, where he is warmly welcomed by a kind "Old Lady" who takes him under her wing. She clothes him, provides a tutor, and introduces him to urban life with all its comforts.

Despite his newfound city life, Babar yearns for his forest family. He reunites with his cousins Celeste and Arthur and convinces them to return with him. Back in the forest, tragedy strikes yet again when the King of the Elephants eats a poisonous mushroom and dies. Because of Babar's experiences and education among humans, the elephants choose him as their new king. He accepts—on the condition that Celeste be made queen—and their joyous marriage and crowning follow.
