This is an exquisite picture book full of poetry and stunning artwork by German author and illustrator Sonja Danowski. Every page is brimming with intricate, minutely detailed illustrations that accompany a verse, recounting the thoughts and hopes of the characters portrayed as well as everyday incidents. There’s Alfred, who is very fond of spots, and sits alone in his shed; young Alberta who is looking after her ducks and Martha who grows vegetable in her garden. Then there is the elderly couple Valerie and Frank or Eric who is looking forward to his picnic. Each double-page spread is a snapshot of their lives.
“What you really want, you say,
Is a happy, normal day,
With little houses, trees and streams,
Eggs to eat and moth-filled dreams”
The verses are beautifully translated from German by award-winning translator Anthea Bell. However, it is the visual narrative that makes this picture book so special. Almost photographic, the finely drawn portraits convey an intense realism that fills the pages. This is probably a picture book for older children as the artwork is quite sophisticated. An expression of desires and dreams – a combination of poetry and strong visual narrative that will ensure this book appeals to a wide audience of both children and adults.
